Flat Roof Insulation

R.S.M Roofing are specialists when it comes to flat roofing systems in Bristol. We offer all the latest options and types of flat roof covering for flat roof construction, repair or replacement.

We’ll make sure your flat-roofed garage, home extension, porch, shed or summerhouse looks smart and stays watertight with an efficient warm deck or cold deck roof installation, depending on your preference and thermal insulation requirements.

A cold roof has insulation tucked in between the roof deck rafters, so cold will inevitably seep through the unprotected wooden rafters into the space below. A warm deck roof has a thick layer of insulation installed on top of the roof deck itself, meaning the entire roof structure is insulated before the covering is applied, making it more thermally efficient.

Flat-Roofing Materials

The traditional and most common favourite flat roofing material of felt blow-torched on with bitumen (tar) remains an affordable, robust solution for waterproofing a flat roof, which we often use when our clients request it.

Alternative flat-roofing materials are:

  • EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) rubber roofing which is glued to clean roof decking and gives a smooth, seamless, neat and clean finish that is much tougher than it looks. It has a lifespan of up to 50 years and its flexibility and elasticity allow it to cover any shape of roof structure. It’s ideal for use in creating a “green” roof, designed to hold planting, because roots can’t penetrate the rubber membrane.

  • Another option is a Glass Reinforced Polyester (GRP) fibreglass roofing system. This consists of a specially formulated liquid roofing resin that is applied to a roof deck base made of 18mm OSB Board, and then topped with reinforcement fibreglass matting. Once cured the resin/matting layer is finished with a UV resistant topcoat in a choice of colours, providing a tough, maintenance free roof covering that can be easily repaired, strengthened or renewed with a fresh application of resin when necessary.

Flat Roof Structure

Whatever you use to cover your flat roof it will only perform its best if the underlying flat roof structure is sound and in good repair.

When we install a new flat roof we provide a strong structural deck made of plywood, timber board or oriented strand board of appropriate thickness. The roof deck must have a slope (minimum 1:80 according to building regulations) to allow rainfall runoff so water doesn’t pool on the surface.

Once insulated and covered in waterproof flat roofing materials the deck should not need replacing for decades, and can be recovered as and when necessary.

If you’re confused about which type of flat-roofing would best suit your budget, the purpose of your building and the structure itself our experts will be happy to explain all the options and advise you which flat roof covering would be right for your requirements.
